Soldier, Palestinian child killed in Gaza

One soldier was killed and five others wounded,
while a 3-year-old Palestinian girl and four armed
Palestinians were killed and several others
wounded, during Israel Defense Forces operations
yesterday in Hebron and Gaza.

The dead soldier was identified
as Givati Staff Sergeant Avihu
Keinan, 22, from the West Bank
settlement of Shiloh. He was
buried at 6 P.M. at the
settlement cemetery.

Three-year-old Dina Issa was
killed in the Bureij refugee
camp when troops moved in to

arrest Hamas activist Mohammed Akal and Islamic
Jihad activist Nur Armana. Eight Palestinians
were wounded in the raid.

In Hebron, two Islamic Jihad gunmen were killed
and one seriously wounded when Border Patrol
troops moved in to arrest the pair.

Keinan was killed when troops came under fire as
they surrounded several houses in the Bureij
neighborhood to search for Armana. At one
point, the troops sent an attack dog into one
house, and Armana shot the dog. For some
reason, the troops thought the dog was shot
from outside, so they moved into the building
and began scouring it for the wanted men. They
were hit by a burst of fire from the gunman
holed up on the second floor. Four of the
soldiers were hit, including Keinan.

Another squad then moved in to rescue the
wounded and kill the armed Palestinian inside.
During that action, the commander of the rescue
squad and another soldier were wounded, one
seriously.

Moving into the camp, the troops encountered
Akal, who opened fire on them and was killed in
response.

In Hebron, troops surrounded a building where
three militants were holed up. The troops
returned fire after gunmen shot from inside the
building. Two of the gunmen were killed
immediately, and one was seriously wounded. One
of the men killed was Diab Shwiki, a senior
Islamic Jihad militant, who was twice targeted
by Israel, escaping both times with light
wounds. The second militant killed was Abed
El-Rahim Talhami, an Islamic Jihad operative
who commanded terror operations around Hebron
and was directly involved in a raid on Otniel.
The third man was Omar Shwiki, Diab's brother,
also a member of Islamic Jihad. Inside the
house, the troops found two submachine guns, a
pistol and hand grenades.

The army imposed a complete closure on the
territories last night, to last until the end
of the Rosh Hashanah holiday aftrer the long
weekend. No Palestinians will be allowed inside
Israel during the coming three days.
