Israeli army shoots two more schoolchildren in Rafah
Wednesday, June 2, 2004
Two 10 year-old schoolchildren were shot in the al-Omaria school run by UNRWA in Rafah, when an Israeli tank fired into their classroom.
Bullets fired from the tank flew through the classroom window, hitting Mahmoud Hamad in the neck and Hisham al Habil in the head. Hisham is now in a stable condition but Mahmoud remains in a serious condition. The boys had not even been sitting by the windows but in the middle of the room.
The school director, Atia Abed al Wahed said there had been no shooting from Palestinians before the tank fired and that the school was well-known to the Israeli troops anyway, and even flies an UNRWA flag. Despite this, the school has been fired on many times, placing the 1,300 students and their teachers in constant danger. Atia said that all they could do was rely on UNRWA to negotiate with the Israeli troops, but that this seemed to have little effect.
Following the shooting, the students and their teachers and parents held a demonstration at the school.
